    Fingerprint, face or card - and why factories often need two

    Fingerprint readers are the cheapest reliable option and work well in offices. On a shop floor they are frequently the wrong choice, and the reason is simply the condition of workers' hands. Oil, cutting fluid, cement dust, dry cracked skin and abraded ridges all defeat optical fingerprint sensors, and the result is a queue at shift change and a supervisor manually marking attendance.

    Face recognition avoids contact entirely and has become the default for industrial attendance. It handles dirty hands, works through most safety gloves being worn, and is fast enough that a hundred workers can clock in without a bottleneck. It does need thought about mounting height and backlighting - a terminal facing a bright doorway will struggle, and the same unit moved two metres will work perfectly.

    RFID cards remain useful as a fallback and for contractors and visitors, where enrolling biometrics is impractical. In practice many Bhiwadi factories run face recognition as the primary method with cards as backup, which also solves the enrolment problem for temporary labour.

    Attendance and access control are different systems

    They are often sold together and sometimes share a device, but the requirements diverge and it is worth being clear about which you are buying.

That brings in the physical hardware - electromagnetic locks, strikes, exit buttons, door position sensors - and, critically, life-safety behaviour. A door on an escape route must release on fire alarm and on power failure, which dictates fail-safe rather than fail-secure locking and an interface to the fire panel.

    Getting this wrong is a genuine safety issue, not a configuration preference. Where we install access control on escape routes we integrate it with the fire alarm system so that a fire condition releases the doors automatically.

    Payroll integration and where projects usually stall

    The device is rarely the difficult part. Projects stall on getting attendance data into whatever payroll or HR system the company already runs.

    Some setups export a flat file that payroll imports on a schedule. Others use a direct database or API connection for live sync. Cloud-based platforms let a head office see multiple plants in one dashboard, which matters if you run units in both Bhiwadi and Neemrana.

    Which biometric system works best in a factory environment?+

    Face recognition, in most cases.     What happens to an access-controlled door during a fire?+

    It must release. Any access-controlled door on an escape route needs fail-safe locking, meaning the lock unlocks when power is removed, and it must be interlocked with the fire alarm panel so that a fire condition releases it automatically. This is a life-safety requirement, not an optional feature. Where we install access control on escape routes we wire and test that interlock as part of commissioning, and we will flag it if an existing installation has been done wrong.

    How many employees can one biometric terminal handle?+

    Device capacity is usually quoted in stored templates, commonly a few thousand, but that is rarely the real constraint. The practical limit is throughput at shift change. A single terminal processing one worker every two to three seconds handles a few hundred people over a shift-change window without a queue forming. For larger headcounts, or where the whole shift arrives within a few minutes, we specify multiple terminals at separate entry points rather than one high-capacity unit.

    Can we run attendance across our Bhiwadi and Neemrana units together?+

    Yes, using a cloud or server-based platform where each site's terminals report to a common database. Head office then sees consolidated attendance across plants while each site retains local control. This is a common requirement in the Bhiwadi-Neemrana belt where a single company runs units in both. It does depend on reasonable internet connectivity at each site, and we configure local buffering so attendance is not lost if a site link drops.

    Is fingerprint data stored as an actual image of the fingerprint?+

    No, on any device we supply. The reader converts the fingerprint to a mathematical template and stores that, not a reproducible image. The template cannot be reversed back into a usable fingerprint. This matters for both privacy and for your obligations to employees. Where the data is stored - on the device, on a local server, or in a vendor cloud - is a separate question and one you should decide deliberately, so we cover it explicitly at requirement stage.
