Duty cycle is the specification that gets ignored
Boom barriers are usually bought on boom length and price. The specification that determines whether the unit lasts is duty cycle - how many open-close operations it is built to perform per hour, continuously, without overheating.
A barrier at the entrance of a small housing society might operate two hundred times a day, spread out. A barrier at a factory gate on a shift change, or at a weighbridge handling a queue of trucks, can be asked to cycle continuously for an hour. Fitting a light-duty unit to a heavy-duty gate produces exactly what you would expect: motor burnout, gearbox wear and a barrier stuck in the up position within a year.
Industrial-duty barriers use stronger gearboxes and motors rated for continuous operation, and increasingly brushless motors which handle high cycle counts far better. They cost more up front and considerably less over five years on a busy gate.
Boom length matters too, and not only for coverage. A six-metre boom carries much more inertia than a three-metre one, needs a correspondingly stronger mechanism, and on windy open sites benefits from an articulated or fenced boom. We size the unit against the lane width and the traffic volume together.
