    Duty cycle is the specification that gets ignored

    Boom barriers are usually bought on boom length and price. The specification that determines whether the unit lasts is duty cycle - how many open-close operations it is built to perform per hour, continuously, without overheating.

    A barrier at the entrance of a small housing society might operate two hundred times a day, spread out. A barrier at a factory gate on a shift change, or at a weighbridge handling a queue of trucks, can be asked to cycle continuously for an hour. Fitting a light-duty unit to a heavy-duty gate produces exactly what you would expect: motor burnout, gearbox wear and a barrier stuck in the up position within a year.

    Industrial-duty barriers use stronger gearboxes and motors rated for continuous operation, and increasingly brushless motors which handle high cycle counts far better. They cost more up front and considerably less over five years on a busy gate.

    Boom length matters too, and not only for coverage. A six-metre boom carries much more inertia than a three-metre one, needs a correspondingly stronger mechanism, and on windy open sites benefits from an articulated or fenced boom. We size the unit against the lane width and the traffic volume together.

    Safety devices are not optional extras

    A boom descending onto a car bonnet, a two-wheeler or a person is the failure mode that matters, and it is entirely preventable with devices that are frequently omitted to save a few thousand rupees.

    An inductive loop buried in the road surface detects the metal mass of a vehicle underneath the boom and prevents it closing while the vehicle is there. A second loop on the approach side can trigger automatic opening for outbound traffic.     The access method should follow from who is arriving. Most sites need more than one.

    Long-range RFID tags on windscreens are the standard for regular vehicles - employee cars, company trucks, society residents. The vehicle is read at a distance and the boom lifts before the driver has to stop, which is what keeps a gate flowing at shift change. Each tag is individually identified, so the gate log tells you which vehicle entered and when.

    ANPR reads the number plate with a camera instead of a tag, which suits fleets and visitor management because nothing has to be fitted to the vehicle. It requires the camera and lighting to be configured for plate capture specifically, which is a different setup from general surveillance, and accuracy depends on plate condition and consistent lane positioning.

    For visitors and contractors, a guard-operated push button or a remote handset remains the practical answer, usually combined with a video door phone or intercom at the gate so the guard can verify before opening. Integrating the barrier with the gate CCTV means every opening is recorded alongside the vehicle image, which is what makes the log useful after an incident.
