    Conventional or addressable - the difference that matters

    A conventional fire alarm system divides a building into zones. Each zone is a loop of detectors wired back to the panel, and when any detector operates the panel tells you the zone, not the device. In a small building with four zones that is perfectly adequate: you know the alarm is in the packing shed and you can see the whole shed from the door.

    An addressable system gives every detector a unique identity on the loop. The panel tells you it is detector 34 in the finished goods store, first floor, north end. On a large or subdivided site this is the difference between responding immediately and searching a zone while a fire develops.

    Addressable systems also monitor themselves properly. The panel knows if a detector has been removed, is dirty, or has drifted out of calibration, and reports it as a fault rather than silently failing. On a conventional system a detector that has clogged with dust simply stops working and nobody finds out until the commissioning test twelve months later.

    Wiring differs too. Addressable loops can be wired as a loop returning to the panel, so a single cable break does not disable the devices beyond it. For any site above a modest size, or anywhere with dusty processes, we recommend addressable and will explain the cost difference honestly.

    Choosing detectors for the actual process in the room

    Detector selection is where most non-compliant installations go wrong, usually by fitting optical smoke detectors everywhere because they are the cheapest line item.

    Optical smoke detectors respond well to smouldering fires and are right for offices, stores and general areas. Put one in a room with welding, grinding, diesel forklifts, steam or high dust and it will produce nuisance alarms until somebody disconnects it - at which point the area is entirely unprotected and nobody has recorded that.

    Heat detectors, either fixed-temperature or rate-of-rise, are the correct choice for kitchens, boiler rooms, generator rooms and dusty processes. They are slower than smoke detection by design, which is an acceptable trade in an area where smoke detection cannot work reliably.

    Beam detectors cover large open volumes such as warehouses and high-bay production halls, where point detectors mounted at roof level would be too far from the fire to respond usefully. Aspirating systems suit cold stores and server rooms where very early warning justifies the cost. Manual call points go on escape routes and at exits so a person who sees a fire can raise the alarm without waiting for detection.

    Compliance, testing and the parts people forget

    Fire alarm work in India is governed principally by IS 2189 for the system design and the National Building Code for the wider building requirements. Your fire NOC, your insurance and in many cases your customer audits all depend on the installation being demonstrably compliant.

    Two things are routinely underspecified. The first is audibility: the alarm has to be heard over the working noise of the building. In a press shop or a machining hall, standard sounders in the corridor are not enough, and the design needs sounder placement calculated against ambient noise, sometimes with visual beacons where hearing protection is worn.

    The second is the interface to everything else. On a fire condition the system may need to release access-controlled doors, stop air handling, recall lifts, shut down certain plant and signal a pump room. These interlocks are part of the fire system design, not an afterthought.

    Finally, a fire alarm system is only compliant while it is maintained. Detectors need periodic functional testing, batteries need load-testing and replacement, and the whole system needs a documented test regime. We provide that under AMC with written records you can produce at audit.

    For anything beyond a small single-space building, generally yes.     Why does our fire alarm keep giving false alarms?+

    Nine times out of ten it is the wrong detector type for the room. Optical smoke detectors fitted in areas with welding fumes, grinding dust, diesel exhaust, steam or high humidity will alarm on the process rather than on a fire. The usual outcome is that somebody disconnects the device and the area silently loses protection. The fix is to survey the affected areas and replace the detectors with heat detection or another appropriate technology rather than to reduce sensitivity.

    How long must fire alarm batteries keep the system running?+

    The panel needs enough standby battery capacity to run the system through a mains failure and still have power to drive the sounders in alarm at the end of that period. The required standby duration comes from the standard and the building's circumstances, and the battery is sized by calculation from the actual load of your device count, not by picking a common battery size. We include that calculation in the design, and we load-test batteries under AMC because a battery that reads the right voltage can still fail under alarm load.

    Can a fire alarm system shut down machinery and release doors automatically?+

    Yes, and on most industrial sites it should. Typical interlocks include releasing access-controlled doors on escape routes, stopping air handling so smoke is not distributed, recalling lifts to ground, and shutting down specified plant. These cause-and-effect relationships are defined during design, wired during installation and proved during commissioning. Door release in particular is a life-safety requirement wherever access control sits on an escape route.

    How often does a fire alarm system need to be tested?+

    A fire alarm system is only compliant while it is maintained, and that means a documented, repeating regime rather than an annual glance. Call points and sounders are exercised frequently on a rotating basis, all detectors are functionally tested over the maintenance cycle, and batteries are load-tested and replaced on schedule.
